Today is the beginning of 6th annual RPM Challenge. This challenge was created by a publication in Portsmouth NH called The Wire. The challenge is to make an album of 10 songs, or 35 minutes of music during the shortest month of the year. This is my third time participating in the challenge. There aren’t any prizes, the point is to see what you can come up with only having 28 days to do it. Every year the amount of entries grow by the hundreds. I have only had one entry for the last two years, but this year I am going to attempt to submit two.
The first one being a concept of conversations I hear at various places, like coffee shops, the squares, the bookstore. I will take a sentence or two of the conversation and put them into music and make a tune from that. I may ask someone a question and use their answer, the possibilities are endless. I should be able to come up with some interesting things.
The second one is an album of Haiku Jazz. I will say a haiku and play music that (I hope) resonates with what the haiku is about. I have a couple of haiku already, just not any music to go with them, I wanted to wait on that until now. I am not sure how that will come out, but I am looking forward to what people say about it. It is very different from anything I have ever done.
At the end of March, the city of Portsmouth NH and other cities around the country have an RPM Challenge Listening Party. That is when the people who have done the challenge go and listen to what other people have created. It begins at the opening where, all of the submissions are on display and you get to see their artwork for their albums. Then it breaks up to different venues around the city. The venues are where the cds have been separated by genre and you go and listen to one tune off the cd one has created. It is a lot of fun to see and hear what others have come up with.
